- What does it take to recognise our own contribution to the patterns that develop in our relationships?
In this episode of From Our Heart To Yours, Nokhanyo Lulu Ndlovu explores the courage it takes to examine ourselves honestly. Our past experiences, emotional triggers, fears and protective behaviours can influence how we respond to the people we love. Sometimes, the very strategies we use to protect ourselves can make it harder for our partners to reach us.
Looking within is not about blame or condemnation. It is about developing self-awareness, taking responsibility for our part, and recognising that while we cannot control our partner's behaviour, we can begin to change how we show up in the relationship.
The more clearly we understand ourselves, the more opportunity we have to respond with intention rather than react from old patterns.
In this episode:
The importance of self-awareness in relationships
The difference between accountability and self-blame
How our past experiences shape the way we love and relate
Understanding emotional triggers and protective behaviours
Recognising what lies beneath our reactions
Taking responsibility without excusing unhealthy behaviour
Becoming a student of yourself before studying your partner
Creating space between what you feel and how you respond
Choosing connection over defensiveness and winning
This Week's Practice
Notice yourself.
The next time something happens that activates you, pause and ask:
What am I feeling?
What am I telling myself about what is happening?
What do I want to do right now?
Will my response move us towards connection or further into the pattern?
You don't have to get it perfect. Begin by noticing. Awareness creates space for choice.
Reflection
What happens inside me when I feel hurt, rejected or misunderstood?
What am I protecting when I respond the way I do?
What am I bringing into the space between us?
A Biblical Counsel
Romans 12:18 reminds us:
“If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”
That responsibility begins in our closest relationships, including our marriage. We may not control our partner's responses, but we can take responsibility for how we show up, choosing to bring patience, kindness, grace and understanding into the relationship.

What if the problem in your relationship isn't simply one person being the problem, but a pattern that the two of you have become caught in?
In this episode of From Our Heart To Yours, Nokhanyo Lulu Ndlovu explores the recurring cycles that can develop between couples. We often focus on what our partner is doing wrong, but relationships invite us to become curious about what happens between us, especially when we feel hurt, rejected, overwhelmed or disconnected.
Understanding the pattern does not mean excusing unhealthy behaviour. It means becoming aware of the cycle so that we can begin to take responsibility for our part and interrupt what keeps creating disconnection.
In this episode:
Why we can become focused on our partner as “the problem”
The patterns and cycles couples can become trapped in
Pursuing and withdrawing
Criticism and defensiveness
How our nervous systems respond when we feel threatened
The difference between responsibility and blame
Looking beneath behaviour to the fear or longing underneath
Identifying your own contribution to the cycle
Learning to interrupt familiar patterns
Moving from “How do I get my partner to change?” to “What can I do differently?”
This Week's Practice
Become a pattern detective.
When tension arises, rather than immediately asking who was right or who started it, notice the sequence:
What happened?
What did my partner do?
What did I do in response?
What happened next?
Then ask yourself:
“What do I do that makes it harder for my partner to reach me?”
And consider one small thing you could do differently the next time the pattern begins.
Reflection
What is our familiar pattern?
What do I tend to do when I feel hurt, afraid or disconnected?
What is one thing I can do differently the next time the pattern begins?
Remember:
You are not the pattern. But you may be participating in it.
The goal isn't to win against your partner.
The goal is to interrupt the pattern that is winning against both of you.

In this episode of From Our Heart To Yours, Nokhanyo Lulu Ndlovu explores the relationship between safety and aliveness, and what it means to create a relationship where emotional security and genuine connection can coexist.
We consider how familiarity can sometimes replace curiosity, how assumptions can create distance, and why continuing to discover the person we love is an important part of keeping a relationship alive.
In this episode:
Safety and emotional vulnerability
The difference between stability and stagnation
Why aliveness is more than excitement or chemistry
Familiarity, assumptions and losing curiosity
Continuing to discover your partner as they change
The importance of turning toward one another
Small ways to nurture curiosity and connection
Creating a relationship that is both safe and alive
Reflection:
Is there both safety and aliveness between us?
Can we feel secure enough to be vulnerable and alive enough to remain curious?
Can we have familiarity without losing wonder?
And can we know each other deeply while still remaining interested in discovering each other?

In this first episode of From Our Heart To Yours, Nokhanyo Lulu Ndlovu explores the difference between functioning and flourishing in our relationships. We can be married, raising children, managing a home and fulfilling our responsibilities, while quietly becoming disconnected from one another.
Drawing from the theme “Empowered to Thrive” and the words of Jesus in John 10:10 — “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” — this episode invites us to consider what abundant life might look like within our relationships.
In this episode, we explore:
The difference between a relationship that is functioning and one that is flourishing
How relationships can gradually drift through ordinary, everyday interactions
The small moments that can create connection—or disconnection
“The space between” and the emotional atmosphere couples create together
Why disconnection does not always happen through one major event
How repeated moments of avoidance, silence, reactivity or missed bids for connection can affect a relationship
Why reconnecting can also begin with small, intentional moments
Moving away from simply asking, “What does my partner need to change?”
The more courageous question: “What am I contributing to the space between us?”
Beginning the journey from surviving to thriving
As you listen, pause and consider:
What is happening in the space between us?
And then, perhaps ask yourself:
What am I contributing to that space?
