Episode 298 Charity Wade - A story of incredible resilience and overcoming addiction

    2025/12/07 | 36 mins.

My highest weight was 233 lbs at 5’0”. That was in 2008. At that time, I went through with gastric bypass surgery. I had always been somewhat overweight, but through four pregnancies, I just kept gaining. I also dealt with postpartum depression and unresolved childhood trauma, which probably led to more overeating and a lack of motivation and energy. After the surgery, I lost weight quickly. I found myself in the 120-pound range. I was loving life. I soon began going out to bars and partying, leaving my husband and children behind. I eventually left my husband, split up our family, and continued down that very selfish path. I believe that I was self-medicating and replacing my food addiction with alcohol. I loved the attention I was getting from men. I somehow managed to raise my children for the next 17 years, but that road was really rough, especially for them. I ended up losing my career as a certified nursing assistant, dealt with legal ramifications after a couple of DWIs, and lost custody of two of my children for a time due to the drinking. I fought with my weight off and on during those years, never gaining all of it back, but certainly not taking care of myself consistently. I found myself in rehab and psychiatric hospitals as I tried to get the drinking under control. On May 12, 2025, I woke up. I have not looked back. I stopped drinking that day and have not touched it since. I am not sure to this day what finally shook me to my senses. It took a couple of weeks as I gently worked within myself to decide what was important to me and who I wanted to be. I knew that I wanted to live the most whole life possible and be the personmy children had been missing out on all of these years. I somehow came across the idea of intermittent fasting. I honestly can’t remember where. I started listening to Gin Stephens’ podcasts, then read her book ‘Fast, Feast, Repeat, and on June 13, I began Alternate Day Fasting. I fast for 36 hours and then eat primarily whole foods during a 12-hour window. I am very forgiving of myself and allow exceptions. I have taken a vacation, gone camping, and celebrated essential events with food, but as soon as the trip or event is over, I jump right back into my schedule. If I want a treat,I plan to have it during my 12-hourwindow. I also feel that a clean fast is crucial. I stick with water - adding sea salt to some every morning, black coffee, plain green or black tea, or plain seltzer water. Unfortunately, my job does require that I taste-test cream cheese some days, but I do what I have to do and then jump right back into my schedule. ADF has changed my life. I don’t think I would have continued my sobriety had I not started intermittent fasting. It gives me a sense of control over my day. I have added pilates and yoga daily, and I'm trying to get in 10,000 steps. I have been able to stop taking all of my depression, anxiety and psychosis medications. Turns out when you aren’t drinking, and you take care of your body, your mind is much healthier!(This isn’t to say that everyone who follows intermittent fasting will be able to step away from the help that behavioural health medications provide - it just turns out that my issues were alcohol related and resolved after stopping drinking and through therapy.) When I began my journey toward a healthier me, I weighed 172 pounds. I have since lost 47 pounds as of October 26 and have reached mygoal weight of 125 pounds. I do have a new goal of 110pounds, but am completely fine with where I’m at. My mantra is ‘I’m Never Going Back’!Show Links Come and Join Our Patreon Community At the Link Belowwww.patreon.com/thefastinghighway 'Come for a month, check it out, and get all the content. To Book a Zoom Call With Graeme One-on-One, Go Here www.thefastinghighway,com To Read My Book The Fasting Highway Amazon or all good book sellers. To Listen to My Audio Book Apple Books or many Audio Book Platforms Free on Joining The Patreon Community

Episode 297 Karen Coleman Ostrov -The journey continues a very inspiring story.

    2025/12/01 | 38 mins.

Karen Coleman-Ostrov, age 65, spent much of her adult life trapped in the exhausting cycle of dieting. She was a lifelong dieter who tried over a dozen different diet programs and protocols, each promising weight loss but ultimately leading to frustration. Some diets caused her to gain weight or slow down her metabolism, while others required tedious food measuring or strict deprivation. Though she often lost weight temporarily, none of these plans were sustainable long-term, and she would always regain what she lost.In August 2020, Karen had a pivotal moment when she saw a stunning, youthful photo of her sister-in-law, Dedra Campbell, on Facebook. Karen initially thought it was a much older photo because Dedra looked so slim and vibrant. When she learned it was recent, Karen immediately called her to uncover her secret. Dedra shared that her success came from practising intermittent fasting, a concept that initially worried Karen because it sounded like deprivation and constant hunger. Yet, out of curiosity and hope, Karen bought the book, “Fast.Feast.Repeat.” by Gin Stephens and decided to give fasting a try—starting with a clean 18/6 fast.To her surprise, Karen found fasting easier than expected. The first fast sparked a change that would transform her life.At the time, Karen weighed 175 pounds (fluctuating often between that and 182 pounds) at 5’5”. Over the coming months, Karen faced challenges like a slowed metabolism caused by years of yo-yo dieting, the effects of menopause, and managing type 2 diabetes. Less than a year into fasting, Karen joined The Fasting Highway and also ordered and read the book.  Karen found encouragement from Graeme and fellow fasters, which was crucial as she learned to trust the process and understand that her weight-loss journey was uniquely hers—meaning she shouldn’t compare her progress to others'. Karen lost weight gradually but steadily.  After about two years, she dropped from 175 pounds to 160, and then a few months later to 149—a weight she hadn’t seen in more than 20 years! Eventually, Karen’s body settled around 142 pounds, a healthy and comfortable place for her. Her highest weight was 208 pounds, at which point she struggled with daily tasks such as bending over to tie her shoes, suffering from sleep apnea, and being out of breath after going up stairs or walking long distances.Today, Karen’s health and mobility have vastly improved. She no longer has sleep apnea and can climb challenging staircases, like the 185 steps of the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse in Bermuda and the 294 steps of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, with ease. Maintaining her weight is effortless now with a flexible intermittent fasting routine, usually fasting 18/6 or OMAD on weekdays, and enjoying longer eating windows on weekends to socialise and eat out.Karen’s favourite part about fasting is the control it gives her over food—not feeling controlled by it. When asked why she continues fasting after reaching and surpassing her goal weight, Karen’s answer is simple: Intermittent fasting is not a diet or a fad—it’s a sustainable lifestyle. This lifestyle has allowed her to lose weight for the last time and live confidently in her body every day.Come and Join Our Patreon Community. Episode 296 -Dianne Le Blanc -Thirty Pounds lost in less than a year an inspiring story

    2025/11/24 | 37 mins.

My name is Dianne LeBlanc. I am 67 years old. And, living in Canada, I have been married to the same wonderful man for 48 years.  We have 2 adult children, ages 46 and 44, and 2 wonderful grandkids, ages 14 and 13. I did not have a weight problem growing up, but like many, after having my children, I started gaining weight.  I joined WW when I was around 30 years old and soon became a lifetime member.  The first time I joined I probably had 15 pounds to lose.  I gained it all back and more in no time and struggled, always.  I tried many different diets over the years, but none were sustainable. Fast forward to December 31st 2024, 2 months after my retirement, I was at my highest weight, probably close to 170, but I’m not sure, because I was no longer weighing.  I’m 5’1’’ tall, and size 12 was too small.  I was very disappointed in myself and thought that I was just going to get bigger. I could see myself turning into my mother, who has been miserable all her life because of her weight. I’m down over 30 pounds and 4 pant sizes since January 1st of this year.  I’m not sure if I have much more to lose, but I’m counting on my body to let me know.Come and Join Our Patreon Community.
