Your inner circle is either your greatest asset or your biggest liability. There's no neutral option.
Welcome back to our series on John Maxwell's 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. Law #11 is the Law of the Inner Circle, and John says it as plainly as I've ever heard it: a leader's potential is determined by those closest to him. This one is personal for me. Every real breakthrough in my life traces back to the people I let in close.
In this episode, John breaks down why the "self-made man" is a myth: if you made everything yourself, you haven't made much. He walks through what he calls the water bucket and the gasoline bucket, how the people around you either put out small fires or turn them into disasters, and why he's convinced there are only two kinds of people in this world: lifters and leaners. Then he hands you the exact grid he uses to evaluate everyone in his inner circle.
I share a story of my assistant Linda, and the night she took an assignment I gave her and made it better than I ever could have on my own. That's what this law is really about. It's not about doing more. It's about who you let close enough to make you more.
Here's what you'll gain from this episode:
The Self-Made Myth: Why claiming you built it all alone isn't something to be proud of, and what it actually reveals about your team.
Water Bucket or Gasoline Bucket: John's test for figuring out who calms the fire in your organization and who throws fuel on it.
Lifters and Leaners: The two types of people in every inner circle, and how to tell which one you're becoming for the people around you.
The Five-Value Grid: John's exact evaluation system for deciding who earns a seat closer to you: potential, positive, personal, production, and proven value.
"You Just Make Me Better Than I Am": My story about Linda, and what it looks like when someone in your inner circle takes what you give them to a level you couldn't reach alone.
I used to think being the hardest worker in the room was enough. It never is. The moment I stopped trying to carry everything myself and started building the right circle around me is the moment my life actually changed.
Take a real look at the five or six people closest to you this week. Are they lifting you or leaning on you?

Jon Gordon might be setting the record for most appearances on this show at this point, and there's a reason for that. He's one of my closest friends, someone I call when I need real advice, and honestly one of only two people left where I still ask myself "what would John do" before I make a big decision, especially now that my dad is gone. When someone like that comes back on the show, you pay attention.
His new book, The Power of Positive Habits, might be the most tactical thing he's ever written. Ninety-three habits, pulled from nearly two decades of working with the best coaches and leaders in sports and business. Out of everything we covered, one story stopped me cold. Jon shared the moment he finally forgave his biological father, a man who wasn't there for his wedding, who abandoned him when he was a year old.
"Holding onto resentment", he told me, "is like gripping a hot coal meant for someone else. You're the one who ends up burned." He wishes he had forgiven faster. So do I, on my own stuff. That's why we're calling this one Forgive Fast.
Here's what you'll gain from this episode:
Forgive Fast: Why holding onto resentment, bitterness, or an old grudge is quietly costing you more than the person who wronged you.
The Thank You Walk: The daily gratitude practice that shifted Jon's mindset, saved his marriage, and became the source of nearly every book idea he's ever had.
Write Your Purpose Statement: Why putting your "why" on paper, not just carrying it in your head, is what keeps you from burning out when things get hard.
The Four Questions: What elite coaches like Sean McVay and Dave Roberts ask themselves every single day to keep improving instead of coasting on past success.
Tune Out Distractions: The sea turtle story Jon shares that will completely change how you think about chasing the wrong lights in your own life.
Jon said the sooner you forgive, the sooner you start growing again. Whatever you're still carrying, this episode is your permission to finally put it down.

You guys, I've gotten so many messages asking me to cover this, and I get it, because I still work on this myself. Today I'm handing you the exact system I use, the one I teach my athletes, my entertainers, and my politician clients, to eliminate most of the problems in your life before they ever get the chance to grow.
And I didn't want to just teach it. I wanted to show you it in action, so I pulled some of the most powerful moments from my archives: Tony Robbins on why fear is physical, a world champion barrel racer's comeback from a 2% chance to live, Dean Graziosi's hardest six months, and Amy Purdy's fight to walk again.
Here's what you'll gain from this episode:
The 3 step formula: Make a decision, flood yourself with certainty, and take insane action. This alone will crush most of your problems.
The 90/10 rule: Why pouring your energy into the problem instead of the solution is the single biggest mistake most people make.
Fear is physical: Tony Robbins breaks down why your breathing, your posture, and your body are running your emotional state, and how to take it back.
The comeback formula: A world champion barrel racer's story of being told she'd never walk again, and what she did with that news.
The lock came off the box: Dean Graziosi's most vulnerable story yet, and the one decision that changed everything on the other side of it.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: you're always going to have problems. That's not a flaw in your life, it's proof you're growing. So take this system, put it to work today, and watch how much lighter you feel. Max out.

People don't follow you because of what you know. They follow you because they feel like you actually see them.
Welcome back to our series on John Maxwell's 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. Law #10 is the Law of Connection, and it might be the most important one yet: leaders touch a heart before they ever ask for a hand.
In this episode, John breaks down why so many leaders want loyalty without ever building the relationship that earns it, and I bring it home with what connection actually looks like when you're leading your team, your family, or yourself.
Here's what you'll gain from this episode:
Understand the Real Root of Resistance: Learn why most pushback from your people isn't really about direction, but disconnection, and what to do about it.
The Locomotive Principle: John's unforgettable story about trains, and why hitting people with your vision is not the same as connecting with them.
Know Yourself Before You Try to Know Anyone Else: Discover why leaders who haven't connected with themselves internally will never connect with anyone externally.
The Nine Ways to Connect: John's practical, step by step list for building real relational trust with the people you lead.
The Herb Kelleher Story: A classic example of the Law of Connection in action, and what 16,000 employees said about the leader who made every one of them feel known.
I've led enough people to know that the ones who stay with you aren't staying for your strategy. They're staying because you saw them first. This one will change how you walk into every room you lead.
This is part of a brand new series releasing every Thursday where John Maxwell and I are walking through all 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership together, one law at a time. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices - Before you have a business or a following, you have a friend. Mine grew up to negotiate six billion dollars in sports contracts.
This episode is different for me. My guest was my best friend when we were ten years old, inseparable, running track together at six in the morning, trading baseball cards, growing up right alongside each other. Then life happened, and thirty five years went by without us being in the same room. After all that time, we finally sat down together, and today I brought him on the show.
Greg Genske went from that kid in my backyard to one of the top sports agents alive, building an agency with Gary Vaynerchuk, teaching negotiation at Berkeley Law, and representing thousands of professional athletes through the biggest deals of their careers.
Here's what you'll gain from this episode:
The Negotiation Secret Nobody Teaches: Greg breaks down the psychology of negotiation and why immaculate preparation on the other person's position beats any tactic.
The Tom Brady Story You've Never Heard: How a single deposition Greg took as a trial lawyer helped open the door for the greatest quarterback in history.
Position Yourself as the Expert: Why the people who separate themselves in any industry teach instead of sell.
Elimination, Not Addition: Greg's decision to give up alcohol after nine years of winning in spite of it, and what he found on the other side.
What 3,000 Athletes Taught Him About Loyalty: The difference between being an agent and being a real partner.
If you've got a friend from your childhood you've lost touch with, this one is your sign to reach out today. Some relationships are worth thirty five years of silence and still worth fighting for.
