What if one of the most important things you could do for your future had nothing to do with losing weight?
What if you should be paying more attention to building muscle?
In this episode of The Over 50 Health & Wellness Show, I’m continuing my special Behind the Book series by reading Chapter 7 of my upcoming book, Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life.
And this chapter is called Muscle Changes Everything.
For decades, we’ve been taught to think about muscle as something cosmetic - big biceps, six-pack abs, bodybuilders, athletes, and gym rats.
But especially after 50, muscle is about something much bigger.
Muscle is capacity.
Muscle is resilience.
Muscle is protection.
Muscle is freedom.
It helps determine whether you can climb the stairs, carry your luggage, get off the floor, play with your grandkids, recover from illness or injury, travel, stay active, and continue saying YES to life.
In this episode, you'll discover:
Why muscle is far more than cosmetic tissue
Why getting lighter isn't necessarily the same thing as getting healthier
How muscle protects your independence and freedom
The idea behind your Muscle Retirement Account
Why strength training after 50 is an investment—not punishment
How small physical investments compound over decades
Why your ability to remain active later in life is being built right now
The incredible story of a woman who began lifting at 70 and became a world-record powerlifter
Why it's never too late to become stronger
And why building muscle may be one of the best investments you can make in your next 30 years
I Want Your Feedback
Fully Alive is still being written and revised - and you're getting a behind-the-scenes look at the book before the finished version ever hits the shelves. And I genuinely want your help making it better.
What resonated with you in this chapter? Did the Muscle Retirement Account change the way you think about strength training? Was there something you disagreed with, wanted me to explain better, or wished I had gone deeper on? Or did this chapter remind you of your own story?
Email me at coach@silveredgefitness.com.
I personally read your messages, and your feedback may help shape the final version of Fully Alive.
And if you know somebody who still thinks lifting weights after 50 is just about looking good... send them this episode.
Because we're not building muscle just to change what we see in the mirror. We're building it so that 10, 20, and 30 years from now, we still have the strength, capacity, independence, and freedom to fully participate in our lives.

What if the goal that's been driving your health and fitness journey for years... is actually the wrong goal?
If you've spent the last decade - or maybe several decades - trying to lose the same 10, 20, or 30 pounds, this episode may completely change the way you think about your body.
This week on The Over 50 Health & Wellness Show, we're continuing the special Behind the Book series with a first look at Part II - Building a Body from my upcoming book, Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life.
And we're kicking off Part II with a statement that probably sounds a little crazy coming from a health and fitness coach: Stop trying to lose weight.
Seriously.
Because here's the truth - nobody really wants weight loss. You don't actually want a smaller number on your bathroom scale. You want what you believe that smaller number will give you.
More energy. More confidence. Better health. Freedom. Strength. Capability. The ability to travel, hike, play with your grandkids, get up off the floor, carry your own luggage, and keep saying YES to life.
So maybe it's time to stop making weight loss the mission.
Maybe it's time to start building a body.
In this episode, you'll discover:
Why focusing on weight loss can actually lead you toward the wrong behaviors
Why losing 20 pounds isn't really what most people want
The hidden problem with making a number on the scale your ultimate goal
Why traditional weight-loss goals come with a dangerous built-in finish line
The difference between changing your weight and changing your identity
Why “I'm trying to get healthy” and “I'm a healthy person” are two very different mindsets
How your identity influences your daily choices
Why lasting transformation is about becoming, not dieting
The question that's far more powerful than “How much weight do I want to lose?”
Why your new mission should be about the next 30 years, not the next 30 pounds
How shifting from shrinking to building can change the trajectory of your second half
📖 Help Me Make Fully Alive Better
This book is still a work in progress, and the feedback I've received from listeners throughout this Behind the Bookseries has been phenomenal.
Please keep it coming!
What resonated with you in this chapter? Did anything challenge the way you've thought about weight loss? Have you experienced the shift from “trying to lose weight” to becoming someone who simply lives like a healthy, active person? Or was there something you disagreed with, didn't understand, or wanted me to explore more deeply?
I want to hear all of it!

Coming Next...
Next week, we'll continue Part II — Building a Body — with Chapter 7:
Muscle Changes Everything
Because if you want to remain strong, energetic, metabolically healthy, independent, and capable as you age, there's one asset we need to start protecting — and building.
Muscle.
Until then...
Stop trying to become smaller.

Eat less. Move more.
For decades, that’s been the default prescription for weight loss.
And to be fair... it sounds perfectly logical.
If you want to lose weight, eat fewer calories and burn more calories.
But if the formula is really that simple, why are so many intelligent, motivated people still struggling? Why do we keep losing and regaining the same 10, 20, or 30 pounds? And why does it seem to get harder every time - especially after 50?
In this episode of The Over 50 Health & Wellness Show, I continue my special Behind the Book series by reading Chapter 5 of my upcoming book: Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life.
Chapter 5 is called “Why Eat Less and Move More Stops Working.” And this chapter represents an important turning point in the book. Because the problem isn't that you need to try harder. You may simply be trying to solve a building problem with a shrinking strategy.
Most traditional diets are built around subtraction: Eat less. Cut calories. Remove carbs. Do more cardio. Burn more. Weigh less. Get smaller.
But think about what you actually want from your body in the second half of life. More strength. More energy. More muscle. More confidence. More resilience. More freedom. More capability.
Those aren't shrinking goals. They're building goals.
In this episode, we'll explore why the traditional eat-less-and-move-more formula eventually breaks down, why doubling down with even more restriction and cardio can leave you frustrated and exhausted, and why sustainability matters far more than short-term results.
I Want Your Feedback!
Fully Alive is still being edited and refined, and you're getting a behind-the-scenes look at the book before the final version is published. So I'd genuinely love to hear from you.
What resonated? What challenged you? What didn't make sense? What would you like me to explore more deeply? And have you personally experienced the cycle of eating less, exercising more, losing weight... and eventually gaining it back?
Send me your thoughts, stories, questions, and feedback at: coach@silveredgefitness.com
I personally read every email, and your feedback may help shape the final version of Fully Alive.
And if you know someone over 50 who's still stuck believing they just need to eat less, move more, and try harder, please share this episode with them.
Because maybe they don't need more willpower. Maybe they need a better blueprint.

If you're over 50 and you've ever said - or even thought - "My metabolism is broken," this episode is for you.
This week, I'm continuing my special Behind the Book series by reading Chapter 4 of my upcoming book: Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life.
And in this chapter, we're tackling one of the biggest - and most discouraging - beliefs in the over-50 health and fitness world - that aging has somehow broken your metabolism.
Because let's face it… it can certainly feel that way.
You eat less. You exercise more. You try harder. And somehow the strategies that worked at 30 or 40 don't seem to work anymore.
So what happened?
In this chapter, I'll explain why your metabolism isn't some mysterious force conspiring against you - and why "broken" may be completely the wrong way to think about what's happening inside your body.
Instead, we'll explore a much more powerful idea - Adaptation.
Your body is constantly responding to the environment you create and the signals you send it.
Years of restrictive dieting. Loss of muscle. Reduced activity. Poor sleep. Stress. Repeated cycles of losing and regaining weight. Your body notices all of it - and adapts accordingly.
But here's the incredibly good news - adaptation works both ways.
The same body that adapted to years of restriction and inactivity can begin adapting to strength training, better nutrition, movement, recovery, and consistency.
Your body isn't finished at 50. Or 60. Or 70.
It's still listening.
In This Episode, You'll Learn:
What metabolism actually is—and what it isn't
Why having a "slow metabolism" is more complicated than most people realize
Why weight loss can become more difficult even when you're eating less
How years of dieting can change the environment your body is responding to
Why muscle loss and declining activity matter so much after 50
The difference between metabolic damage and metabolic adaptation
Why the bathroom scale can convince you nothing is working—even when your health is improving
Why trying to force your body to lose weight may be the wrong approach
How strength training, movement, nutrition, recovery, and consistency send your body new signals
Why your goal isn't to get your 25-year-old metabolism back
And why the body you have today may be far more capable of change than you've been led to believe
The big takeaway?
Stop asking "Is my metabolism broken?"
Start asking "What has my metabolism been responding to?"
Because once you stop treating your body like the enemy, you can begin creating an environment that encourages it to thrive.
And that's where things get exciting.
📖 You're Helping Me Write This Book!
Fully Alive is still being revised - and you're getting to hear it before the final version goes to print. That means I want your feedback.

Send me an email at coach@silveredgefitness.com.
I personally read your emails, and your feedback may help shape the final version of Fully Alive.
And if you know somebody who's convinced their metabolism is broken, share this episode with them. They may not need another diet. They may simply need to understand that their body hasn't betrayed them.

Does it feel like your body suddenly started playing by a different set of rules after 50?
You’re not imagining it.
In this third installment of the Behind the Book series, I share Chapter 3 of my upcoming book, Fully Alive, and tackle one of the most common questions I hear from men and women over 50…
"Why does this feel so much harder than it used to?"
For years, we've been told that getting older automatically means getting weaker, slower, heavier, and less capable. But what if that's only part of the story?
In this chapter, you'll discover the critical difference between aging and decline, why muscle loss may be the hidden culprit behind many of the frustrations people experience after 50, and why your body is far more adaptable than you've been led to believe.
Most importantly, you'll learn why your future health, strength, and vitality are not predetermined - and why your best years may still be ahead.
In This Episode:
Why weight loss feels different after 50
The difference between aging and decline
The silent impact of muscle loss over time
Why most people blame age for problems that started decades earlier
The surprising adaptability of the human body
How strength training changes the aging equation
Why "I'm just getting old" can become a dangerous belief
The inspiring story of a client who achieved her first pull-up in her late fifties
Why your body is still listening—and still capable of change
The enormous opportunity most people miss in the second half of life
I'd Love Your Feedback
This book is still a work in progress, and your feedback genuinely helps shape the final manuscript.
What resonated with you?
Was there a story or idea that hit home?
Did something challenge a belief you've held for years?
Do you have your own story of becoming stronger, healthier, or more capable later in life?
