  • 323 // The 5 essential elements of a well styled home
Hey friend! Have you ever wondered what what REALLY goes into having a well styled home - like all those pretty pictures you see on Instagram or Pinterest? Yes...cohesiveness matters. Yes...being in tune with your design style is important. Yes...finding and buying the right things can pull a room together.   What's really at the heart of a well styled home? These 5 elements: 1. Proportion/scale/balance: Not too big, not too small. Things that fit and fit appropriately from ground up, wall inward. 2. Textured lighting: Forget the overhead lighting and opt for layered lighting - table lamps and floor lamps that work harmoniously to cast a cozy glow. 3. Layers & texture: intentionality in home design is ensconced in all the layers! 4. Repetition: the goldilocks rule applies here. Not too much repetition and not too little - just enough. The more subtle the repetition of design elements the better! 5. Negative space: even artists and photographers employ the idea of having negative space in their compositions. The same is true in our homes. Negative space allows your home to shine with all of the intentional decisions you've made.   Join THE COLLECTIVE   Have a question YOU want answered on the show? • 322 // Slow decorating is at the heart of THIS home decorating style
Hey friend! A few years ago when the world shut down, Cottagecore took the decorating world by storm. Cottagecore is a decorating style, yes, but it's more of a lifestyle defined by the idea of slowing down and living more sustainably with a big nod toward nostalgia. Though the foundation of what defines Cottagecore hasn't changed, some of the nuances have.  In today's episode I'm reacquainting you with the fundamentals of Cottagecore and what you can expect in the style as it has evolved over time. I also share 10 ways you can bring Cottagecore into your home if you're wanting to try the style...it's a fun one!!! She wonders what styling tips are for creating a gallery wall that looks elevated, not chaotic!! Other listeners, however, may not like the rigidity of having grid-like art displays and want gallery walls that look a bit more fluid and organic. Listen in on today's podcast to hear how you determine which style is best for you and what strategies you need to consider in order to keep your gallery wall (which ever style you choose) cohesive. • 320 // How a Decorating SOS call saved Erika from adding a dying trend to her home
Hey friend! Have you ever thought about making a change to your home, but worried it could be a trend on its way out? In today's coaching call with Erika, she was contemplating adding a textural wood treatment to her home. Through our conversation she learned that the specific treatment she wanted to add is a trend that has one foot out the door. Although still relatively popular, designers aren't seeing it as a timeless design. Time to change plans. Throughout our conversation we talked about: * adding color * creating a gallery wall * updating her curtains * re-sizing her area rug * bringing in elements to warm up her living room, making it feel cozy and inviting   Are you wanting help in your own home, but don't know if a Decorating SOS call is right for you? Ask yourself these questions: 1. Do you have a clear end goal in mind? 2. Do you know the steps you should take in order to meet that end goal? 3. Do you have a clear understanding of what your decorating style is? 4. Does your partner (if you share a home) act as a good sounding board for decorating decisions? If you answered NO to any of these questions, a Decorating SOS call could be worth the investment. • 319 // Confessions of a home decorator: 10 decorating mistakes that are on every designer's pet peeve list
Hey friend! While watching home decorating shows, have you ever noticed designers mention design decisions that are instant no-nos, faux pas or pet peeves? It happens in every industry, including home decorating. So...what are they so you can be sure to NOT do them? In today's episode, I'm answering listener Eleanor's question who has noticed design no-nos that she wants to avoid in her own home. She's asking for a list so she can be sure to avoid them all. So if you're wondering which rules are important and which ones shouldn't be broken, listen up...this episode is for you! 10 decorating pet-peeves of home designers (aka 10 mistakes you should avoid in home decorating): 1. Too small, non-existant or floating area rugs. 2. Pushing furniture against the walls. 3. Cluttered surfaces. Too many smalls rather than fewer, larger piecess. 4. Capri curtains. 5. Ignoring scale and proportion. 6. Overhead lighting instead of layered lighting. 7. Matchy-matchy furntiure sets. 8. Too thematic rather than alluding to farmhouse, beach cottage, etc. 9. Ignoring the entry way or front porch. 10. TV as the focal point or shrine in the room.   Have a question YOU want answered on the show?
