Ep. 258: Gunship Ace - The most famous combat helicopter pilot alive | Neall Ellis

    2026/08/12 | 57 mins.
I interview Colonel Neall Ellis ("Nellis"), a South African military aviator and a widely regarded as the most famous combat helicopter pilot alive. His story spans over four decades of global conflict, where he transitioned from an elite air force pilot in the South African Air Force (SAAF), flying Alouette III gunships during the South African Border War and Angolan Civil War. He was awarded the Honoris Crux (South Africa's decoration for bravery) in 1983 for his heroic actions under heavy fire during Operation Super. After retiring from the SAAF he chose to return as a private military contractor. Ellis flew for prominent private military companies like Executive Outcomes and Sandline International, in to some of the world's most chaotic combat zones such as the Balkans and the Congo. During the Sierra Leone Civil War, Ellis achieved legendary status by playing a critical role in halting the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebel advance on Freetown, using an aging Mi-24 Hind gunship. Famously, operating under extreme combat conditions, a $1 million bounty was placed on his head by the RUF.
