Parenting The Adlerian Way

I had a wonderful talk with Carl Dalton, CEO of Dalton Associates, about how his Adlerian upbringing by his dad (and my mentor, Dr Dan Dalton) and his mom, Marilyn, shaped his approach to leadership, community care, and service design. The conversation centers on the history of the Dalton family’s involvement in working with First Nations’ communities and how that has led to Dalton Associates' work with First Nations communities in Northern Ontario. We also discussed how this integrated mental wellness model has been developed for police and public safety personnel. We explored what it takes to build trust across cultures, how to measure impact in community care, and why listening, humility, and continuity matter more than parachuting in with a preset solution.

Alex Kopelman’s book focuses on how our children are born with an authentic self that gets socialized out of them. Through messages they hear from parents, classrooms, culture and beyond, children start to hide parts of themselves as a way to belong and survive. However, Alex also states that the change needs to begin with parents, or at least in a parallel process of dropping many of the “oughts and shoulds” of parenthood too. Listen in to learn more about the distinction he makes between just allowing a child to run wild and undisciplined versus encouraging them to be authentic while also learning how to get along with others.
