168: Collegiate Gothic Design | University of Richmond Boatwright Memorial Library

    2026/03/27 | 1h 8 mins.
In this episode, Cherise is joined by David Bagnoli, Principal at StudioMB Architects in Washington DC. They discuss the University of Richmond Boatwright Memorial Library Project in Richmond, Virginia.
You can see the project here as you listen along.
The renovation and expansion of the University of Richmond’s Boatwright Memorial Library reimagines the institution’s academic heart for a new era of liberal arts education. Originally constructed in 1953 and expanded in 1974 and 1983, the Collegiate Gothic landmark has long anchored campus life. The latest transformation respects this architectural legacy while introducing a more open, inclusive, and adaptable environment—one that reflects how students learn, collaborate, and discover in the 21st century.

167: Glass Courtyard | Stealth House

    2026/03/20 | 44 mins.
In this episode, Cherise is joined by Scott Specht, Founding Partner at Specht Novak Architects in Austin, Texas, who previously joined us in 2023 to discuss the New American House. Stealth House, also in Austin, Texas.
You can see the project here as you listen along.
Tucked along a gravel alley behind a row of traditional homes in downtown Austin, the Stealth House by Scott Specht of Specht Novak Architects is deliberately elusive. From the street, the 1,100-square-foot residence reveals almost nothing: a low, rust-colored steel façade, punctuated by the absence of outward-facing windows. Crossing the threshold reveals a radically different spatial experience. Sunlight pours through floor-to-ceiling glass that frames two verdant interior courtyards. Rather than opening outward toward the street, the house turns inward, creating a private landscape that mediates between architecture and nature.

166: Triple-Friction-Pendulum Base Isolation System | Oregon Supreme Court

    2026/03/13 | 45 mins.
In this episode, Cherise is joined by Andrew Smith, AIA, APT RP, Principal and Historical Architect at Hennebery Eddy Architects in Portland, Oregon. They discuss the Oregon Supreme Court Interior Modernization and Seismic Retrofit in Salem, Oregon.
You can see the project here as you listen along.
The rehabilitation of the Oregon Supreme Court Building stands as a model for how historic preservation and forward-looking resilience can coexist within a single architectural vision. A triple-friction-pendulum base isolation system was inserted beneath the building, effectively decoupling the superstructure from ground motion. This move transforms the foundation into a dynamic interface: in a Cascadia Subduction Zone event, the ground may oscillate laterally up to two feet while the building above remains comparatively stable.

    165: Inside-Out Design | Fifth & Tillery

    2026/03/06 | 50 mins.
In this episode, Cherise is joined by Travis Albrecht, Studio Director and Principal, and Michael Waddell, Senior Associate and Design Director at Gensler in their Austin, Texas office. They discuss the Fifth and Tillery office building in Austin.
You can see the project here as you listen along.
At the seam between East Austin’s quiet neighborhoods and the grit of its industrial past, Fifth + Tillery begins with an act of restraint. Instead of expanding outward, the project turns inward—reclaiming a neglected warehouse and reimagining its bones as a porous, living campus for work and community. The result is not a new monument, but a renewed place: a building that remembers where it came from while pointing toward what cities can become.

164: Streamline Moderne Renovation | Long Beach Airport

    2026/02/27 | 1h 2 mins.
In this episode, Cherise is joined by Michael Bohn, AIA, Partner, and Kirk Keller, Principal and Director of Landscape Architecture at Studio One Eleven in Long Beach, California. They discuss the Long Beach Airport Renovation and Historic Terminal Preservation Project completed in 2025.
You can see the project here as you listen along.
Studio One Eleven’s renovation of Long Beach Airport is the culmination of a decade-long partnership with the City—an effort to elevate the airport into a world-class gateway while preserving the easygoing character that makes it unmistakably local. The most recent phase focuses on restoring the historic terminal, a Streamline Moderne landmark, by peeling back decades of alterations to reveal the clarity and elegance of its original design.
