50 - EPISODE 22 - Apples of Gold in Settings of Silver - Q&A by Dr Keith Palmer

    2026/04/28 | 30 mins.
John Newton was an eighteenth-century Anglican minister who is best known as the writer of the hymn ‘Amazing Grace’. Yet he was also the leading pastoral counsellor of his generation, maintaining a prolific letter-writing ministry of pastoral care to dozens of people from all walks of life who wrote seeking his advice. But why was Newton’s counsel so popular? Dr Palmer will seek to answer this question by exploring Newton’s unique theology of suffering, which formed an essential structure that informed and shaped his model of soul care. Influenced by this doctrine, Newton’s manner and methodology of pastoral care are explored, highlighting key principles of his strategy as he sought to care for others.

    48 - EPISODE 21 - Facing Suffering - Q&A by Dr Sean Perron

    2026/03/25 | 1h 5 mins.
Suffering is deeply personal yet transformed through Christ’s own personal suffering, and endured through honest communion with God as we hope in Jesus. In every kind of suffering—even the kind that terrifies us—God is sovereign, wise, and good, and therefore we can submit to His loving will. God uses suffering to sanctify us and to teach us how we can overcome our fears through biblical practices. Dr Perron will help us learn how to apply these biblical truths both in our own lives and the people we are counselling.

    46 - EPISODE 20 - Redeeming Memory - Part 2 by Dr Matt Rehrer

    2026/01/29 | 57 mins.
Memory plays an important role in the Christian life, both in its proper function but also in its corruption. Dr Rehrer will offer help for Christians who suffer knowingly or unknowingly from the heavy burdens of memory. These burdens, like bitterness or shame, afflict you with seemingly endless reverberations in your thoughts. Do you ever wonder if the vicious cycle will ever end? Will the repeating loops ever be broken? Dr Rehrer will examine memory through the prism of the gospel to find hope in the midst of misery. Through God’s redemptive plan, memory transforms from a millstone to a milestone. God removes the burdens of memory and enlivens hope in His redemption.
