In the latest episode of our epic, chapter-by-chapter Silmarillion journey, we’ll explore Chapter 22, “Of the Ruin of Doriath”
After the devastating tragedies of Chapter 21, we get…more devastating tragedies! Chapter 22 picks up with Húrin, now old and worn out by Morgoth’s tortures. Set free to wander aimlessly in the wasted regions of Beleriand, he inadvertently sets in motion a series of events that will lead to end of the kingdom of Doriath, once the hidden heart of Beleriand’s free regions.

In the latest episode of our epic, chapter-by-chapter Silmarillion journey, we’ll explore Chapter 21, “Of Túrin Turambar”
The tale of Túrin is a long one, rivaling “Of Beren and Lúthien” and “Akallabêth” as the longest chapter in The Silmarillion. It is also quite tragic, as we shall see. After giving a bit of background on Túrin’s ancestry, it picks up where the last chapter left off, with Túrin’s father Húrin imprisoned in Angband. The chapter then focuses in on the highly tragic twists and turns of Túrin’s life.

In the latest episode of our epic, chapter-by-chapter Silmarillion journey, we’ll explore Chapter 20, “Of the Fifth Battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad”
After Beren and Lúthien’s excellent adventure, what could possibly come next? Only a great battle brimming with bloodshed and “Unnumbered Tears” of course! First though, Tolkien provides a brief epilogue for Beren and Lúthien, giving them a happy ending, though, in true Tolkienian fashion, leaving Melian with a “grief of loss” heavier than anyone has ever known.
With the exploits of Beren and Lúthien having demonstrated Morgoth’s vulnerabilities, the time seems ripe to press the attack, and that’s where the story of the Fifth Battle of Beleriand picks up.
