  • Episode 30: Joe Randene
Joe Randene, a U.S. Navy veteran, is on his second tour of Greensboro, and he's already making an impact in the short time that he has been back. Randene is a major weight-loss success, and he's running for others, and he's running to inspire others, too. Randene completed the Allison Woods Halloween Hobble 100-mile race in Statesville on Oct. 6-7, and he'll compete in the Triple Lakes Trail Race 40-mile event in Greensboro on Oct. 20. In this episode, recorded Oct. 10, Randene introduces himself, then we discuss: 3:00: Why would anyone want to run 100 miles. 4:34: His progression toward the distance and his training for the race in Statesville. 10:53: Fueling and nutrition for a 100-mile race. 14:22: The cause he supported in the race. 19:20: How he has fit into the running community in the Triad. 22:38: His decision to start running when he tipped the scales at 330 pounds. 28:50: His service in the U.S. Navy and where life had led him and his family. 33:37: What he has learned about himself through running. 36:06: What's next after you've completed a 100-miler.

  • Episode 29: Women's running safety with Jen Goff, Heather Pulliam, Julie Day
The murders of runners Mollie Tibbetts in Iowa during the summer and Wendy Martinez in Washington in September weigh on the minds of female runners across the nation. But safety during a run is paramount for women on a daily basis, particularly those who have experienced incidents here at home. "To have to think about 'Do I have this?' when I leave the house to make sure I'm safe – it's a hindrance," Reidsville runner Heather Pulliam says. "You can walk out and just go," she tells a male journalist and runner. "But we can't. We have to be ready. ... You've got to be able to take care of yourself, and we have to think about these things so that we don't become the victims." Fleet Feet Sports in Greensboro will host a "Run Safe, Run Happy" clinic at 6 p.m. Monday. Greensboro Police Department officer Chris Zimmer, a runner, will speak, then the group will go on a 3-mile run-walk about 6:20 p.m. before returning for a self-defense presentation. The event, at 3731 Lawndale Dr. in Greensboro, is free, and men and women are invited. As a preview, Pulliam, Fleet Feet Sports coach Jen Goff and Julie Day join me for a new episode of The Running Shorts Show, where they discuss their experiences and share tips about safety and gear that they find helpful.

  • Episode 28: Mandy Wahl
Mandy Wahl, a Greensboro resident and employee at Fleet Feet Sports, is balancing her new life as a mother – Mara was born April 23 – with her love for ultramarathon running. In this episode of The Running Shorts Show, Wahl discusses runs in September at the Blue Ridge Relay and at the Doggettville 12 relay and ultra marathon less than five months after Mara's birth – but also some long-distances races in late 2017 and early 2018 in which Mara tagged along before she was born.

  • Episode 27: Dabney Sanders and Laura Lorenz, Run 4 the Greenway
The Run 4 the Greenway road race on Oct. 27 is a fundraiser that supports the Downtown Greenway, which is under construction in Greensboro. The event, anchored at Morehead Park at 475 Spring Garden St., will begin with a 1-mile run at 4:30, followed by a 4-mile race at 5 p.m. The Downtown Greenway has been under construction since 2009, but Action Greensboro project manager Dabney Sanders sees a finish line for the work arriving in 2020 (visit Greensboro.com/RunningShorts to see photos of the greenway). In a new episode of The Running Shorts Show, I'm joined by Sanders and Laura Lorenz, the Run 4 the Greenway race director and a Downtown Greenway assistant and campaign manager, to talk about the road race and the greenway. We discuss: 1:01: Details about the Run 4 the Greenway and how you can sign up. 6:52: Action Greensboro's history in the city, dating to 2001, and the mission and vision behind the Downtown Greenway. 12:14: The art work, including the cornerstones, woven into the greenway. 19:33: The status of remaining construction and what's ahead. 21:01: The challenges but also the successes, including community engagement and economic investment nearby, experienced during the project. 26:21: How the project has remained true to its original vision, even as it has evolved over the years.

  • Episode 26: Sean Caviness and Rick O'Reilly, Heroes Red and Blue 5K
The Heroes Red and Blue 5K Will Caviness Memorial Road Race on Sept. 29 in Greensboro will be held in memory of the late Greensboro Fire Department captain. The event will honor firefighters, police officers and public safety heroes with proceeds going to the International Association Fire Fighters to support the International Burn Camp. Will Caviness was raising funds for the association's Burn Foundation at the 2011 Chicago Marathon when he collapsed near the end of the race and later died. Will's brother, Sean, a runner and Greensboro Fire Department captain, and Rick O'Reilly, representing Junction 311 Endurance Sports, join me for this new episode of The Running Shorts Show. We discuss: 0:58: Details and background about the race. 5:17: Sean's role in the Fire Department. 7:27: How Will followed his older brother into first-responder service. 9:11: What growing up was like for the brothers. 10:40: Will, the runner. 13:21: What blocked Will's attempt before Chicago to qualify for the Boston Marathon. 15:03: Fundraising for the Burn Foundation. 16:42: The "why?" that hasn't been answered and how Sean has coped with losing a brother. 18:32: The close ties between the brothers' families. 19:55: What you need to remember about Will Caviness.
