Trained at Rhode Island School of Design and École des Beaux-Arts, she combines calligraphy, video, installation, and performance to explore memory, spirituality, and impermanence. Known for inscribing Buddhist sutras on organic materials, her work engages with nature and transformation. She has exhibited internationally, including at the Gwangju Biennale, Centre Pompidou, and Tate Modern, and is held in major public collections. Born in 1943 in Hilla near ancient Babylon, he studied in Baghdad and Paris and later taught at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. His work has been exhibited internationally, including recent solo shows at Mathaf in Doha and Lawrie Shabibi in Dubai. In 2018, he was awarded the Jameel Prize 5 at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Moutashar’s practice bridges tradition and modernity, and his works are held in major public and private collections worldwide. Trained as an architect, his practice spans drawing, sculpture, and large-scale installations that often emerge from personal narratives and erased histories. Shono represented Saudi Arabia at the 2022 Venice Biennale with "The Teaching Tree" and exhibited "What Remains" at Desert X 2025. His work frequently uses elemental materials, sand, fabric, palm fronds, to evoke fragility and transformation.
