Their accounts seemed to point toward the same hidden world.

Yet in 1542, the Dominican friar Gaspar de Carvajal recorded numerous large settlements, roads leading inland, stored food, and heavily inhabited stretches of river during Francisco de Orellana’s descent of the Amazon.
Modern archaeology has transformed the debate. In Brazil’s Acre state, aerial imagery, excavation, and radiocarbon dating have documented geometric ditches, embankments, roads, ceramics, and long histories of land use. In the Upper Xingu, archaeologists working with Indigenous communities have identified planned plaza settlements linked by roads and surrounded by managed landscapes. In Bolivia, airborne LiDAR has exposed Casarabe centers with monumental earthen platforms, pyramid-like mounds, causeways, canals, reservoirs, and ranked settlement networks.
The newest surveys suggest that many more archaeological sites may remain beneath the canopy. But the evidence also demands caution. An earthwork is not automatically a city. Some structures may have been ceremonial, defensive, hydraulic, or used only at particular times. Amazonia was home to many distinct cultures, not one unified empire.
The mystery is no longer whether Indigenous Amazonians built complex engineered landscapes. They did. The unresolved question is how extensive those landscapes were, how many people lived within them, and how much of Amazonian history remains physically invisible beneath the forest.

Tello during the nineteen twenties, the burials revealed a sophisticated culture whose funerary bundles and embroidered fabrics remain among the great achievements of ancient South America.
The skulls have inspired intense debate. Intentional cranial modification is a documented practice in ancient Peru and around the world: pressure applied during infancy could permanently guide the growing skull into elongated, flattened, widened, or conical forms. Yet selected Paracas specimens have prompted claims about unusually large cranial capacity, irregular sutures, reddish preserved hair, and controversial DNA tests said to suggest ancestry beyond expected pre-Columbian populations.

The individual, called LB1, was an adult female standing only about one meter tall, with a brain volume of roughly 420 cubic centimeters. At first, the remains appeared so small that a child seemed possible. Permanent teeth showed otherwise.
Formally named Homo floresiensis in 2004, this extinct human species became known popularly as the Flores “hobbit.” Yet the nickname obscures the deeper evidence. The Liang Bua fossils combine a tiny body and brain with large feet, unusual wrists, primitive skeletal traits, stone-tool associations, and a survival record extending into the Late Pleistocene.
