American Monster: The Trial Of Caleb Flynn

Caleb Flynn's words to Alleigha Botner in the hours before Ashley Flynn's death are now being measured against what Botner says she believed those words meant. She testified that Flynn promised February 16, 2026 would be the day he finally left his marriage.
Botner told jurors that Flynn walked her through his plan: talk to Ashley, speak with his daughters and Ashley's parents, ask about employment, get a hotel, and move out. She said their messages stretched past midnight. She also testified that she used ChatGPT that evening for information about divorce, proof of an affair, and deleting messages, then sent Flynn screenshots.
The next morning, Ashley was found dead in the Flynn home. Flynn reported an intruder. Prosecutors allege he killed Ashley and staged the scene; Flynn has pleaded not guilty. Botner said the timing struck her as too much of a coincidence. She messaged Flynn asking whether he was involved, then deleted the messages because she was afraid investigators would discover the affair. Botner also admitted she initially denied the relationship when questioned by the FBI.
Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis joins Tony Brueski to put those facts into the courtroom fight. Prosecutors are asking jurors to consider the messages as part of their theory of planning and motive. The defense can challenge how much weight to give Botner's interpretation, her deleted communications, and her admitted initial lie to investigators.

Caleb Flynn's 911 call gave investigators his first public account of what happened inside the Cunningham Court home. Prosecutors say his private messages supply the motive they believe sits behind that account. The jury now has to decide how much those two records belong together. 
At approximately 2:31 a.m. on February 16, Caleb called for help and said somebody had broken into the home and shot Ashley Flynn. He told the dispatcher Ashley had two shots to her head, said the garage door was open, and reported that his daughters were in the house. Officers arrived minutes later and found no intruder. Prosecutors allege Caleb killed Ashley and staged a burglary; the defense says the state cannot turn suspicion and marital misconduct into proof beyond a reasonable doubt. 
The prosecution has also told jurors about more than 100,000 messages exchanged between Caleb and another woman during an affair. Among the messages read in opening statements were statements prosecutors attribute to Caleb about finding ways to kill Ashley without going to jail and killing her "in a heartbeat" if he could avoid hell. Caleb's defense has acknowledged the affair while rejecting the prosecution's conclusion. He has pleaded not guilty. 
Tony Brueski and former FBI behavioral expert Robin Dreeke examine the 911 call as behavior, not a confession, and then move to the private messages as alleged motive evidence. The pressure point for jurors is whether the words before the call make the intruder story more meaningful or simply more emotionally difficult to separate from the evidence.

Caleb Flynn's lawyers decided jurors would hear about the affair from the defense before it became a prosecution ambush. Emily Smith opened with Proverbs, acknowledged Flynn's infidelity and lies, and argued that being a bad husband does not answer the murder charge. The defense is betting that candor on the marriage creates room to fight everything else. 
Everything else begins with Flynn's intruder account. He says someone stole his 9mm handgun from his Ford truck and entered the Tipp City home before Ashley Flynn was killed. Prosecutors allege the break-in was staged and Flynn was responsible. The missing firearm remains a central gap the defense continues to emphasize. 
Ohio BCI Special Agent David Hammond testified that he found no signs of forced entry at the garage door Flynn identified as the entry point. On cross, the defense focused on the unlocked locks and limits in Hammond's ability to date the damage around that door. 
The personal side of the case is headed to the witness stand too. The woman prosecutors connect to Flynn's alleged affair is expected to testify. Flynn's daughters are also witnesses, with the judge restricting video of the juveniles but allowing audio recording of their testimony. 
Robin Dreeke and Jennifer Coffindaffer examine whether the defense can admit the betrayal without letting prosecutors turn it into the whole story. The trial record also changes how one early visual is read: the towel over Ashley's head came after Flynn said the 911 dispatcher told him to place it there. Caleb Flynn's case begins with a sentence that police could test against a physical door. He told a 911 dispatcher somebody had broken into his Tipp City home, shot his wife Ashley, and left the garage open. The call came at 2:31 a.m. on February 16 while the couple's two daughters were also inside the house. 
Ashley Flynn was 37, a middle school volleyball coach and substitute teacher. Prosecutors allege Caleb killed her and staged the home to resemble a burglary. He has pleaded not guilty, and his defense has argued that authorities focused on him too quickly. 
Trial testimony has now put the garage itself in front of the jury. Ohio BCI Senior Special Agent David Hammond testified that the damage to the garage side door did not look consistent with forced-entry burglaries he had investigated. That creates a direct factual dispute around the story Flynn gave dispatch before officers arrived: was the garage evidence consistent with an unknown intruder, or does it support the prosecution's staging theory? 
Robin Dreeke and Jennifer Coffindaffer join Tony Brueski to analyze the call, the claimed point of entry, and the difference between behavioral observations and evidence police can physically check. A Miami County grand jury indicted Flynn on 11 counts, including aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, three counts of tampering with evidence, and two intimidation counts. The jury will not be deciding whether the 911 call sounded convincing. It will be deciding whether the state can prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt after every word, door, and physical detail is tested in court.
