Laying Down The Lore: 40K

In our Warhammer 40K lore dive episode 83, we explore the Ork Freebooterz, the galaxy’s most outrageous pirates, mercenaries and outcasts, who abandon their clans in pursuit of loot, glory and a good fight. We examine how these unruly krews operate under larger-than-life Kaptins, from heavily armed Flash Gitz and renegade Mekboyz to Weirdboy Warpheadz, Gretchin bandits and other eccentric specialists. Along the way, we uncover their ramshackle Kill Kroozers, spectacular weapons, boarding tactics and questionable mercenary loyalties, revealing how greed and cunning can be just as important as brute force in Ork warfare.

In our Warhammer 40K lore dive episode 82, we explore the Ironkin of the Leagues of Votann, fully sentient mechanical beings who live as equals alongside their flesh-and-blood Kin. Created by the ancient Votann Ancestor Cores, these artificial intelligences are not servants or disposable machines, but valued members of their Kindreds, possessing individual identities, personalities and a shared ancestral heritage. We examine their origins, unique Cerebral Units and specialised roles, from industrious miners and Warp-navigating Wayfinders to heavily armoured Steeljacks and brilliant Memnyr Strategists. Along the way, we uncover the increasingly troubling decline of the Ancestor Cores, the mystery of why fewer Ironkin are being created, and the extraordinary contrast between Kin society and the Imperium, where such independent machine intelligence is condemned as heresy.

In our Warhammer 40K lore dive episode 81, we explore the Puritan and Radical factions of the Imperial Inquisition, uncovering the bitter ideological divisions within the Imperium’s most powerful and secretive organisation. We examine the Puritan philosophies of the Amalathians, Monodominants and Thorians, who seek to preserve Imperial order, eradicate corruption or bring about the Emperor’s rebirth, before turning to the Radicals who believe that forbidden knowledge, Chaos itself and even rebellion can be weapons in Humanity’s defence. From the daemon-binding Xanthites and resurrectionist Horusians to the reformist Recongregators and warmongering Istvaanians, we explore the dangerous beliefs that drive Inquisitors into conflict with one another. Along the way, figures such as Gregor Eisenhorn reveal how easily conviction can become obsession, raising the central question at the heart of the Inquisition: how far can an Inquisitor go to save Humanity before becoming the very enemy they swore to destroy?

In our Warhammer 40K lore dive episode 80, we explore the Blood Pact, the terrifying Khornate army that proves devotion to the Blood God does not have to mean mindless berserk fury. Forged from the warrior cults of the Sabbat Worlds and bound personally to Urlock Gaur, the Blood Pact combines fanaticism with discipline, logistics, communications and sophisticated combined-arms warfare. We examine its distinctive grotesque masks and blood-red uniforms, its hierarchy of Etogaurs, Damogaurs and Sirdars, and specialist forces ranging from Death Brigades and Gore Mages to Loxatl mercenaries, Chaos Space Marines and daemonic war engines. Across battles such as Belshiir Binary, Phantine and Jago, the Pact repeatedly demonstrates an unsettling ability to learn from Imperial doctrine and turn it against its creators. Ultimately, its greatest threat is not simply brutality, but organisation.
