In The Know - “Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Valley Assistance Services in Action” (Aired 10/13/2025)
This week on In the Know on KGVY AM/FM, Andy Taylor welcomed Chris Erickson, Executive Director of Valley Assistance Services (VAS), for an insightful conversation about the organization’s vital role in supporting health, safety, and financial stability throughout the community.Chris discussed VAS’s long-standing partnership with the Santa Rita Fire District through the SHIM (Safety and Health in Motion) program. Since 2010, this initiative has focused on fall prevention, sending a VAS registered nurse and a Fire Corps volunteer directly into homes to identify potential hazards, recommend safety modifications, and educate residents about medication safety, balance, and mobility. The discussion also touched on health and wellness education, with ongoing classes led by VAS nurses covering topics such as hypertension awareness and medication management. Chris emphasized the importance of using a single pharmacy to monitor prescriptions and reduce dangerous interactions — an issue particularly relevant for local seniors managing multiple medications.Beyond health services, VAS offers a workforce training program and access to a computer lab, helping residents update resumes, build interview skills, and re-enter the workforce — a growing need for retirees facing financial challenges. The organization also provides financial education workshops both in-person and online, empowering residents to better budget and plan for their future.Andy and Chris wrapped up by highlighting VAS’s community events, including the popular Guac and Salsa Challenge at the Tubac Golf Resort and Spa, where Wisdom’s Café took home top honors in both categories. Most VAS programs are free, with only a small fee for medication management services.Residents can learn more, volunteer, or sign up for upcoming classes at valleyassistanceservices.org or by calling 520-625-5966.
