Summary
The iPhone Duo has officially arrived, and Apple's first foldable iPhone is generating plenty of excitement, questions, and controversy! In Episode 447 of In Touch With iOS, Dave Ginsburg welcomes Jill McKinley, Chuck Joiner, Jeff Gamet, Eric Bolden, Marty Jencius, and Guy Serle for a lively discussion about Apple's latest hardware, software updates, and developments across the Apple ecosystem.
The biggest story is the launch of the iPhone Duo. The panel explores early reviews, first-generation compromises, and whether Apple has delivered a compelling foldable experience. From the absence of Face ID and concerns about heat to hinge durability after 32,000 folds, there's plenty to discuss. They also cover the confirmed 4,883 mAh battery, launch-day availability, shipping delays, and extraordinary demand that has pushed some orders into 2027. Apple Pencil support arriving with iOS 27.2, future Reachability improvements, and the new "Made for iPhone Duo" App Store designation add even more to the conversation.
Apple is also preparing for its October 28 "Pro and Tell" event, while release candidates for iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, watchOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, macOS Golden Gate 27.2, and visionOS 27.2 signal another round of software updates. The panel looks at Sound Glow coming to existing HomePod models, Apple's immersive horror experience for Vision Pro, and other developments for Apple's spatial computing platform.
On the Mac side, Perplexity Computer's ability to run locally raises interesting possibilities for AI-powered workflows, while the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Privacy Badger extension expands to Safari. Other news includes Apple's iWork apps gaining an Intelligent Assistant, changes coming to Apple Music, new protections against fraudulent website certificates, and 1Password's approach to keeping passwords hidden from AI agents. The panel also touches on Apple's expanding U.S. production commitments and Verizon's new iPhone Handoff pricing.
In this week's Things We Found, Dave highlights the OWC USB4 Hub, Eric shares Pu-Erh Pearls tea and an iPhone case, Jill recommends an acrylic laptop protector, Marty explores a minimalist iPhone Duo case, Jeff spotlights BetterDisplay Pro, and Chuck introduces the DELTAHUB HoldX magnetic mount.
From foldable iPhones and Apple Intelligence to privacy, security, accessories, and practical Mac tools, Episode 447 delivers another entertaining and informative look at what's happening in the world of Apple!

Summary
Apple is making a big push into the smart home, and there's plenty to discuss! In this episode of In Touch With iOS, Dave and the panel explore Apple's latest announcements, including the all-new HomeView smart home display, an upgraded Apple TV 4K, and a refreshed HomePod mini. We also cover the latest Apple operating system betas, the future of Apple's foldable iPhone, and some great apps and accessories.
The biggest discussion centers on Apple's new HomeView, a seven-inch smart home display designed to bring HomeKit controls, Siri, FaceTime, media, and Apple services together in one convenient location. We explore its A18 chip, built-in camera, speakers, sensors, personalized content recognition, and options for tabletop or wall-mounted installation. The panel debates whether HomeView offers enough functionality to justify purchasing another Apple device, especially for those already using an iPad as a smart home controller. With no traditional App Store, will HomeView's built-in capabilities be enough to make it the centerpiece of Apple's smart home ecosystem?
Apple's updated Apple TV 4K brings an A19 chip, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, AV1 decoding, far-field microphones, and a redesigned remote featuring Precision Finding. But at $299, is it worth upgrading from an existing Apple TV 4K? The panel examines the new hardware, improvements to everyday streaming, and whether Apple is positioning Apple TV as a more capable gaming platform. Could Apple finally become a serious competitor in the living room gaming market?
The refreshed HomePod mini also gets attention with improved processing, newer wireless connectivity, and additional audio capabilities, including surround sound support when paired with Apple TV. We discuss whether these improvements justify replacing existing HomePod minis or whether the updated speaker makes more sense for someone expanding their smart home or building a new home theater setup.
The latest developer betas are here, and we review updates across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. One notable change in iOS 27.2 is a redesigned Health app featuring new insights and longevity-related information. We also discuss expanded language support for Apple Intelligence and whether the latest betas offer enough improvements to get excited about.
Apple Vision Pro is getting a new immersive horror experience with The Remnants. The panel discusses what makes immersive storytelling different from traditional movies and whether experiencing horror in a spatial environment might be a little too intense for some viewers. We also briefly touch on the latest visionOS beta developments.
Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone, referred to as the iPhone Duo, generates plenty of discussion. We debate the advantages of a larger folding display, potential productivity benefits, expected pricing, camera compromises, and the possibility of Touch ID replacing Face ID. Would a foldable iPhone change how we use our devices, or is it another expensive gadget that looks more appealing than it is practical? Several panelists explain why they might wait for a second-generation model.

Summary
We start with Vision Pro, where Apple released the third developer beta of visionOS 27.2. Apple and Red Bull are also taking immersive video back into extreme sports with World of Red Bull — Big Wave Surfing, putting Vision Pro viewers alongside professional surfers tackling the waves of Teahupo'o, Tahiti with immersive stereoscopic video and spatial audio.
It's also another busy beta week. Apple's iOS 27.2 developer beta 3 and public beta 2 are out, along with updates across iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS, and macOS. We discuss whether public betas belong on your primary devices and look at code in tvOS 27.2 that hints at Apple Intelligence support for a new Apple TV.
On the Mac side, macOS 27.2 continues through beta testing while Apple also prepares release candidates for older supported macOS versions. That raises an important question for Mac administrators: how do you manage multiple supported versions of macOS across an organization? Meanwhile, rumors continue around a redesigned MacBook Pro that could feature OLED displays and a thinner chassis. We discuss whether those potential improvements are enough reason to hold off on buying a MacBook Pro today. Apple also updated MagSafe 3 cable firmware and has removed Intel Macs from its Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad compatibility lists.
