    Today in History: The Jewish people in Shushan the capital were permitted one extra day to fight their enemies. They celebrated on this day instead (see Esther 9:18). That is why it is called “Shushan Purim,” and Purim is still celebrated on this day in Jerusalem.

    Today in History: Haman plotted his wicked scheme to kill all the Jews on this day (see Esther 3:13). Thanks to Queen Esther, the Jewish people were also given the right to defend themselves from their enemies on this day (see Esther 8:12–13). The Fast of Esther (Ta’anit Ester) is a short fast on the Jewish calendar that lasts from sunrise to sunset. It falls shortly before Purim to remember the three days Esther and the Jewish people fasted to be saved from Haman’s evil plot (see Esther 4:15- 16).
