  • May 22, 2025 Daily Reading- Read the Bible in 1 Year
Thank you for joining me as we learn about the connection between Passover, First Fruits, Shavuot (pronounced shav-oo-oat) and Pentecost. As part of understanding and observing the festivals that God has appointed for us to observe, we count the Omer (pronounced oh-mare) today and then have our daily Bible reading session! Here is the link for a downloadable devotional if you would like to count the Omer for yourself. It has been put out by the Messianic Jewish Congregation Shoresh David in Florida: https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/Today's reading will cover the Book of Amos Chapters 4-7:1-9. Today we will read about God's disappointment that despite the discipline He brought to Israel, Israel failed to return to Him. God will describe the many ways in which His people are disappointing Him- treating the poor badly, not being fair, being prideful, getting angry about being told they are doing wrong, acting like doing right isn't important, engaging in loud worship services with music rather than doing what is right, fair, and looking for good to do rather than bad. God once again asserts that He desires to be merciful, the people just need to seek Him and do what is right! In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the importance of coming to God with our heart, not just paying Him lip service. We will be reminded that God has set us apart by His commandments and we are meant to behave the way He has called us to behave and the way He SHOWS us how to behave- with mercy, fairness, love, and kindness, without being prideful. We need to be sure we are seeking to do what is right rather than looking for ways to get away with things that are wrong. We will be encouraged that God treats His people differently, sending rain to one field and letting another one dry up. As His people who follow after Him with our whole hearts we can be certain that God will take care of us and not lump us in with His judgments against the world. It has been put out by the Messianic Jewish Congregation Shoresh David in Florida: https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/Today's reading includes the Book of Hosea Chapters 10, 14, 2 Chronicles 25:26-28, Chapter 26, and the Book of Amos Chapters 1-3. Today we will read about God's impending judgment on not just the nation of Israel, but also Judah and all the nations who are oppressing the poor. We will also read about King Uzziah, who comes into power after his father, King Amaziah, is killed by the people after he falls into sin and disobeys God. We will read that King Uzziah was good, looking for ways to make God happy, and so God brought him good things as a result. In our discussion for daily application we will talk about modeling the behavior that we saw in King Uzziah- let us find ways to make God happy, much like we would do on Mother's Day or Father's Day for those we love here on Earth. We know from our reading and discussion yesterday that God delights in us having knowledge of Him, really KNOWING Him and understanding who God is. Let us look for all the ways we can make God happy! He does so much for us and not because He has to. He chooses to be kind and loving to us. Does He not deserve for us to choose to find ways to make Him happy? Let us CHOOSE to be compassionate to others, kind, loving, thoughtful of others the way God is with us. Let us CHOOSE to make God the most important one in our lives and spend time studying, reading His Word getting to know who God is, not because we HAVE to, but because we CHOOSE to. God isn't looking for us to do things out of obligation but by choice. Let us choose to find ways to make God happy today and every day. It has been put out by the Messianic Jewish Congregation Shoresh David in Florida: https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/Today's reading includes the Book of Hosea Chapters 1-8. Today we will read about God's great sadness over His people in Israel refusing to turn back to Him and stop sinning. As a result, God will bring discipline to Israel, removing the people from the land, and sending them to the Assyrians. But there is hope! The time of God's discipline will come to and end! Judah and Israel will once again become one nation and God will call even those people who were once not His people, HIS people (the Gentiles!) "He will give us new life after two days. He will bring us back to Him on the third day." In our discussion for daily application we will be reminded that God delights in mercy, as we spoke about yesterday from Hosea 6:6, rather than sacrifice, and that God delights in us having knowledge of Him more than burnt offerings. We will be encouraged, as we read today, to really learn to know God. The more we learn and know about God the more we come to realize how much He loves us and then the more we come to love Him! Let us spread the news to everyone we meet that God loves them SO MUCH! He wants EVERYONE to come to Him! It is NEVER too late to come to Him! As part of understanding and observing the festivals that God has appointed for us to observe, we count the Omer (pronounced oh-mare) today and then have our daily Bible reading session! Here is the link for a downloadable devotional if you would like to count the Omer for yourself. It has been put out by the Messianic Jewish Congregation Shoresh David in Florida: https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/Today's reading comes to us from the Book of Jonah and 2 Kings Chapter 14:25. Today we will read the story of Jonah and see him try to run away from God, not wanting to bring a message of repentance to Nineveh because he knew God would be compassionate, kind, loving, slow to anger, and forgiving of the people and he didn't want the people to be forgiven. He wanted them to receive judgment for their sins. In our discussion for daily application we will talk about being like Jonah ourselves, trying to run away from God when we don't want to deal with something and wanting people to get what they deserve, rather than desiring to be compassionate and forgiving toward people. We will talk about Jesus showing compassion for those who were hurting him on the cross, praying for God to forgive them because they didn't know what they were doing. We will read God tell Jonah today that He has a right to be compassionate on people and animals, too, because He made them!! We will read 1 Peter 3:8-9 today, being reminded that God does not act slowly as we understand slowness, but God is compassionate, slow to anger, desiring ALL PEOPLE to come to repentance; He doesn't want anyone to perish in His great judgment! We will be reminded of our recent reading in Joel, where God tells us that even in the last days people can still come to Him! God desires mercy! He is so merciful and compassionate and forgiving of us. He sent Jesus to die for all of our sins so that everyone who believes in Him will not die, but have eternal life with Him. Let's tell everyone about our loving, kind, compassionate, forgiving, patient God who loves us and wants us to come to Him and be saved! Today's reading will cover 2 Kings Chapters 13, 14, and 2 Chronicles Chapter 25. Today we will see God's great compassion for His people of Israel, that when the king cries out to God, God will save Israel from the Arameans. We will also see King Amaziah, from Judah, obeying God when God sent a prophet to him telling him not to use hired men from Israel to help him win a battle. Later on we will see the same king disobeying God when told not to worship idols he brought back from the battle God helped him win! In our discussion for daily application we will talk about being mindful not to become arrogant in our perceived successes. We may be obedient to God for a time and experience success, but that does not entitle us to be arrogant and not expect to be disciplined later when we fail to obey God, especially when God convicts us of our sins and tells us not to do something. It is God who decides the winning or losing of battles for us, not our own strength or cleverness or even past obedience.
