Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies

Pour yourself a bowl and sharpen the roof of your mouth because Episode 188 of Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies is serving Oops! All Specialty Segments — the podcast equivalent of picking every golden Cap'n Crunch square out of the milk and hoarding the berries for last. Jay begins with the perfectly reasonable story of how he once convinced missionary companion Eddie Marquez that he possessed prophetic powers, thanks to a cereal box spotted atop a stranger's refrigerator. From that sacred breakfast revelation springs an entire episode stripped of its usual format and crammed with the Horror Avengers' strangest, funniest, most personal obsessions. These are the segments that prove no corner of Horror is too shadowy, scholarly, slimy, or absurdly specific to investigate. You'll encounter a documentary best entered completely blind, a digital demon limping out of the early Internet, and a ranked menu of dinner scenes guaranteed to ruin your appetite. There is even a debate over whether "King Kong vs. Godzilla" is gloriously goofy or merely terrible (because peace was never an option). Nine Horror Avengers enter the cereal bowl; only the yellow squares have been removed. The result is sweet, jagged, colorful, and likely to leave your ears pleasantly scraped raw. (Ai writing is so weird…)
Along the way, the gang travels from silent Swedish dread and South Korean found footage to backwoods cannibals, PG-13 exorcisms, so-called "Elevated Horror," and the urgent cultural necessity of killer-hippo cinema! Jay asks listeners to say "hippopotamus" aloud at work, condemns "Hungry" for making the obvious Hungry Hungry Hippos joke, then immediately asks whether everyone has lost their marbles. Mister Watson breaks bread over 15 disturbing dinner scenes while admitting he cannot confidently explain why No. 12 outranks No. 5. Gillman Joel and Dr. Shock confront "Horrorvision," a movie so baffling that its ending inspires the show's spiritual image: everyone simply limping off into the distance. Yet amid the glorious nonsense, Episode 188 also makes room for genuine heart: Dr. Shock's remembrance of Judith Barsi and a warm, funny tribute to Dave Zee's podcasting career, including the revelation that this entire operation was built on meeting strange men online and that Dave Zee once determined it takes exactly 563 licks to reach the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop. It is an all-you-can-eat buffet of scholarship, tangents, friendship, monsters, marbles, and questionable life choices. This is what happens when Horror fandom is allowed off its leash. Bring a spoon, say grace, and as the part Cajun Gillman Joel says, "Stay swampy."

And here we have another edition of Dead Man Still Walking, *the* Zombie Movie Podcast starring Dr. Walking Dead himself, the distinguished Dr. Kyle Bishop! For this embalmed but exhumed excursion into the murkiest depths of zombie cinema, the good doctor welcomes first-time DMSW guest Mister Watson — a man whose exceptional movie picks have earned him praise from Jay of the Dead. Naturally, Dr. Bishop rewards Watson's exemplary taste by subjecting him to a movie widely considered to be "one of the worst zombie movies ever made": Zombie Lake (1981). Set in a French village roughly 10 years after World War II, "Zombie Lake" concerns a squad of slain German soldiers whose bodies were dumped into a mysterious lake — only for the waterlogged Nazis to rise again and terrorize the townspeople.
Also in Episode 187, Dr. Walking Dead and Mister Watson discuss the film's painfully poor makeup, historically questionable uniforms, gratuitous Euro-sleaze, interminable flashback and truly baffling zombie behavior. Are these creatures flesh-eating zombies, blood-drinking vampires or merely undead horndogs with an irresistible attraction to skinny-dippers? And yet, buried beneath the green face paint and woeful execution, our reviewers discover the remains of a potentially compelling movie. The mythology of a lake that demands human sacrifices, a forbidden wartime romance, a zombie father who remembers and protects his daughter, and a community haunted by the consequences of its past all suggest that "Zombie Lake" might deserve that rarest of cinematic opportunities: a remake of a bad movie. Join Dr. Bishop and Mister Watson as they attempt to find intelligent thematic possibilities in a film that stubbornly refuses to contain them!

Here in Episode 186, Jay of the Dead and his fellow Horror Avengers bring you several new Horror movie reviews, including Send Help (2026), Luc Besson's Dracula (2026), Passenger (2026), and Surrender (2025). Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies presents the 63rd edition of Dead Man Still Walking, your favorite Zombie Movie Podcast hosted by Dr. Walking Dead Kyle William Bishop! This time, the good doctor returns to an older corner of zombie cinema with Umberto Lenzi's strange and unconventional Italian horror film "Nightmare City" (1980), a movie whose director apparently insisted was not a zombie movie, despite Dr. Bishop arriving at a very different diagnosis. And of course, as for me and my house, we will be believing Dr. Bishop's assessment. The infected creatures of "Nightmare City" are unlike your average shambling undead: They use knives, clubs, guns and even a harpoon gun; they appear capable of planning and communicating nonverbally; and instead of merely eating flesh, they sometimes stop to drink their victims' blood. That leaves Dr. Walking Dead pondering an especially unusual case of cinematic zombiism: Are these monsters zombies, infected humans, vampires or some bizarre hybrid of all three?
Kyle examines the monsters' apparent resistance to gunfire, vulnerability to brain trauma and ambiguous method of spreading their condition while arguing that, regardless of Lenzi's objections, "Nightmare City" belongs in the zombie movie conversation. Dr. Bishop also places the film firmly within the post-Romero zombie boom, noting its conspicuous similarities to "Night of the Living Dead," "Dawn of the Dead" and the Italian zombie films that followed in Romero's wake. Kyle discusses the Dawn-like music, helicopter imagery, siege elements, Molotov cocktails and the movie's heavy-handed warning about nuclear power and radiation. Along the way, Dr. Walking Dead praises the score, questions the inconsistent gore effects, calls out some dated and misogynistic character behavior and identifies "Nightmare City" as the sort of cinematic oddity that may be worth seeing precisely because it is so strange.
And then there is that ending. In a spoiler section, Dr. Walking Dead tackles the film's infamous last-minute narrative reset, recycled opening footage and "the nightmare becomes reality" conclusion — a twist that inspires considerably more frustration than admiration. Even so, the unusual zombie-vampire creatures and the movie's place within the history of Italian zombie cinema earn it a Low-Priority Rental recommendation rather than an outright Avoid.
